An 8-day vertical journey from Georgia's oldest layer — a 2nd-millennium-BC cave city — to the glacial crowns of the High Caucasus. Three regions, four activity disciplines, and one unifying logic: each day goes deeper, higher, or further than the last.

    02 — HIGHLIGHTS

    Six things that define it

    01

4-hour horseback expedition from Ushguli — Europe's highest inhabited village — to the base of the Shkhara Glacier, on trails used by Svan families for a thousand years.

    02

Private lunch and wine tasting with Nika Vacheishvili, former Georgian Minister of Culture — guardian of the "Wine of the Kings" in the Ateni Valley.

    03

7 km alpine trek to the Shdugra Waterfall — the largest in Georgia — under the legendary twin-peaked Mt. Ushba (4,710 m) in the Becho Valley.

    04

Uplistsikhe — a rock-hewn cave city in active use from the 2nd millennium BC to the 9th century AD, Georgia's oldest inhabited archaeological site.

    05

18 km of whitewater rafting on the Rioni River through the gorges of the Racha region — the expedition's adrenaline finale.

    06

Prometheus Cave — a 3 km karst system of illuminated stalactites and a silent boat ride on an underground river: the subterranean counterpoint to the vertical landscape of Svaneti.

    03 — THE EXPERIENCE

    What you're signing up for

    Who this is for

Active, curious travellers who want a multi-discipline Georgian expedition with a clear narrative arc — each day is purposefully different from the last. Day 4 (4-hour horseback ride + 2 km glacier trek) is the most demanding. Day 5 (7 km mountain trek, 400 m gain) and Day 7 (18 km rafting) both require physical confidence. No single discipline requires technical experience — but overall fitness is non-negotiable. Minimum age 15.

    Journey type

    A multi-discipline Caucasus expedition combining:

Archaeological immersion — Uplistsikhe cave city Equestrian expedition at high altitude — Ushguli to Shkhara Glacier Alpine trekking — Becho Valley, Shdugra Waterfall, under Mt. Ushba Whitewater rafting — Rioni River, Racha region

    What makes it unique

The Upward Path is structured as a narrative, not a checklist. The cave city at the beginning grounds you in Georgian history; the private encounter with Nika Vacheishvili connects you to its living culture; the horseback expedition in Ushguli delivers you to the glacial edge of the Greater Caucasus; and the rafting finale washes the mountains off your body. Most Georgia tours visit the same sites in the same order. This itinerary uses them as chapters in a single story that begins underground and ends on a river.
