INDONESIA: TWO FIRES, ONE STORY

It is demanding but non-technical: rated 4 out of 5. The summit is 3,805 m, the trail is steep with sustained effort, and the expedition includes one overnight at a high camp around 3,200 m before a pre-dawn summit push. No ropes or climbing gear are required, but a good level of fitness and comfort with long trekking days is essential.

Mount Kerinci stands at 3,805 m (12,484 ft). It is the highest active volcano in Southeast Asia and the highest volcano in Indonesia, taller than Japan's Mount Fuji (3,776 m). It lies within Kerinci Seblat National Park, part of the UNESCO Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra.

The dry season from April to September offers the most reliable trekking conditions and the clearest summit views. This expedition departs in August, within that window. Rain is still possible at any time in a tropical rainforest, so waterproof layers are part of the recommended kit.

It depends on your nationality. Many travellers can enter Indonesia on a visa on arrival or electronic visa on arrival (e-VOA), but requirements change, so check the latest rules for your passport before booking. A visa, if required, is not included in the expedition price.

On Siberut Island you stay in a traditional Mentawai Uma, a communal longhouse, with local guides and community members. Days are spent learning traditional fishing methods, basic forest skills, and daily life within the Uma. Conditions are basic and remote, and the experience is built around respectful, community-based engagement.

You should be comfortable with several consecutive days of activity, long trekking days in humid conditions, a steep ascent and descent at altitude, and basic accommodation in isolated areas. Minimum age is 15.

This is a small-group expedition with a maximum of 10 travellers, which keeps the experience personal on the mountain and inside the Mentawai community.
